Food wastage is a nightmare for every farmer but preservation helps prevent spoilage.

Preservation is the act of storing/keeping crops over a period of time to prevent contamination by pathogenic organisms, bacteria, and chemicals.

Some of the common methods of food preservation are drying, salting, freezing, and canning.

As a farmer grows in his business, one of the challenges he may face is how to preserve his food and why he should preserve them.

So, this piece will explore three importance of food preservation and I hope you find them useful.

Food preservation causes seasonal foods to be available throughout the year. For instance, in the absence of fresh maize during the dry season, canned ones can be used instead.

Food deteriorates over time due to factors like heat, chemicals, and spoilage bacteria.

In cases of mild spoilage, the food may look or smell edible but the taste of the food cannot be the same.

In extreme cases, spoilage causes the crops to be totally useless, leading to wastage.

Proper food preservation prevents wastage by helping the crops retain their qualities and nutritional value making the crop fit to plant and healthy to consume. It also lead to an increase in sales in your business.

When there is a supply of healthy crops to your customers, there would be an increase in demand which would make your business more lucrative and productive.

No customer wants to buy from someone who supplies them with crops that have been infested by insects and bacteria.

So, if you are a farmer reading this, take food preservation very seriously.

The longevity of your business depends on it.
